Starting a new job? 5 tips for having a great first day

Congratulations! You have worked hard on your CV, perfected your interview techniques and now you have accepted the job.

Starting a new job is daunting for anyone and nerves are expected but here are some tips to boost your confidence and ensure you have a successful first day!

  1. First impressions count

Make sure you arrive on time and suitably dressed. Plan your wardrobe beforehand, if you aren’t certain about the dress-code aim for smart attire e.g. pair of trousers or a dress and a blazer. That way you can keep an eye out for what other employees are wearing on the day. If you are unsure about how long the drive or commute will be try to plan ahead and test it out before your first day, there is no excuse for being late!

2. Be confident and show your willingness to learn and work hard

It is important to act confident and have confidence in your abilities. It is easy to become overwhelmed with nerves especially if you are like me and suffer with anxiety! Remember that it is your knowledge and experience that got you this far and now all you need to do is demonstrate your skills to your new boss.

3. Take notes and ask questions

You will be taking in masses of information on your first day so try and write as much as you can down, that way if you forget anything you can look back in your notepad. Ask as many questions as you can during the first week, that way you won’t need to bombard your colleagues with obvious ones later down the line.

4. Get to know your colleagues

Go out of your way to introduce yourself and show interest in your fellow workmates. Show your friendly side and chat with them during lunch or offer to make them a cup of tea or coffee if you are heading to the kitchen. You may be shy but the sooner you get to know them the easier and less daunting your workdays will be.

5. Relax

It is easy to stiffen up your muscles and feel tense during your first day so to avoid getting any aches and pains try to relax the night before. Read a chapter of a book, listen to music or try some meditation to keep your mind and body relaxed. During the day remember to smile, it is easy to become swamped in a mixture of emotions but try to enjoy yourself and embrace your new work adventure!

What tips do you have for having a smooth and successful first day?

14 things I’m thankful for on the 14th.

Hey everyone,

I have been super duper busy these past few weeks working hard and also having lots of events and arrangements to attend. I thought I would write a quick blog post listing the things I’m thankful for especially in light of what has been happening around the world these past few days.

I’m thankful for…

♥  My family and friends always.

That I have a roof over my head and a place I call home.

Positive vibes

My new work related adventure (working for a company writing content, creating graphics and managing social media accounts)

Future plans and dreams slowly falling into place.

Being lucky enough to travel, see places and spend time with family (holiday in August)

Nature

Books. Reading is a great escape for me and I don’t know what I would do with myself if I couldn’t read.

My freedom. To speak my mind, do what I want and write freely is of huge importance to me especially as a female and I will always have my independence.

Balance and moderation.

My body and mind. Both of which aren’t perfect but it’s a working progress but I’m pleased that I feel and look healthy and happy.

Support

Baths. Alchemy baths and LUSH baths are just too perfect for me. The little things count.

Myself. It is hugely important to love yourself and take care of yourself.

I love writing these lists because they keep me so grounded. Even if you are having a bad day/week/month/year look around you and remind yourself of what you do have instead of what you don’t.

What are you thankful for? Leave a comment below.

Thanks,

Gee

My Mykonos Retreat.

After spending eight days on the beautiful Cycladic island of Mykonos it is safe to say I have the post holiday blues after falling in love with such a visually breathtaking country.

We stayed in apartments overlooking Paraga beach, each day we had authentic homemade Greek food for breakfast and lunch made by our lovely host Anna.

We explored the island on a rented quad-bike and visited the many beaches Mykonos has to offer. In the evenings we headed into Chora and wandered down the narrow alleyways looking for places to eat and hunting for Pedro the famous pelican!

As we visited in May it is just before the party season picks up, however the beach clubs and bars are still open late and we definitely enjoyed some cocktails (mocktails for me) on the beach under the blazing sun.

Walking through the town was charming and everything I imagined this part of Greece would be. The square shaped buildings teamed with bright white and blue accents sit quaintly and make this scenic island a perfect backdrop for your holiday pictures.

Eat seafood on the port or try the greek speciality of gyros and then indulge in some shopping in the little boutiques.

I bought a platinum sterling silver necklace with the greek eye on and also purchased some local honey, olive oil and olive soap.

If you are fancy a splurge visit the Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger and Dsquared stores. Many of the small designer shops also hold collections of Chanel and Balmain for those of you that have been saving!

It is easy to see the whole island in five days by car, quad or bicycle and that is one of the things that attracted me to Mykonos. It is not often you can go on holiday and tour across the whole country!

Must see:

  • Little Venice
  • Windmills
  • Agio Sostis beach
  • Paradise beach
  • Delos (island of ancient ruins and birthplace of Apollo)
  • Mykonos Town (Chora)

A tiny island in the Aegean sea, Mykonos offers authentic traditional food, cultural landmarks, sandy beaches and stunning architecture. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation accompanied by incredible views and chic beach bars than Mykonos is the place for you.

See more of my pictures on Instagram and comment below and tell me all about your Greek adventures!

Review: Just Bee Honey Water.

There is a huge decline in the number of beekeepers currently in the UK and bees are in danger of being completely wiped out from our environment.

Bees are a vital part of our food chain, so much so that about 70 crops in the UK depend on and benefit from bees.

I was delighted to be sent some Just Bee Honey Water to sample and review. I have always bought local honey due to being a hayfever sufferer and always keep my fingers green by planting flowers and plants in my garden. Most of which are bee friendly!

Just bee drinks are only 49 calories, 100 % natural and contain vitamins and flavonoids which are natural antioxidants. They contain spring water with an added drop of honey from British and European beekeepers.

The drinks come in 3 delicious flavours:

Blueberry –  Sweet and light this a lovely flavour that is thirst quenching. Try pouring it into a tall glass with ice and fresh blueberries.

Lemon & Green Tea – Slightly bitter but I drank this one early in the morning pre-workout.

Apple & Ginger – My favourite flavour! Super refreshing with an added bite I could drink this over and over again!

Just Bee drinks donates 10% of it’s profits to bee charities and even sent me a packet of wildflower seeds to scatter in my garden.

Order direct from their website here and find out more information about you can save the bees!

Coconut Lane and Ivy Park.

After making recent purchases from online store Coconut Lane and Beyonce’s fitness wear Ivy Park I decided to combine the two together to make a more substantial blog post.

If you follow me on social media platforms Twitter and Instagram you will know that I have been posting a lot about Coconut Lane and talking about their products and how you can get a discount code from me (I’m a coconut queen ambassador).

I have made a few previous purchases and I constantly scour the ‘new in’ section to see what goodies I can get because I never get bored of shopping. So when I saw the white marble patterned notebook I knew I had to have it. It matches my phone case and my nails and at the moment I can’t get enough of this design.

I love writing lists and doodling so this is the perfect accessory for any journalist and blogger. I will taking it on my vacation next week to write down notes and plans for the days ahead. Sure enough it will match the white and blue architecture of Mykonos.

Alongside my notebook I bought this rose gold pearlescent bracelet. It is adjustable and shines beautifully in the sun. The jewellery from Coconut Lane is really good value and is on trend. Many people have complimented me on the bracelet and now I can’t wait to buy the black version!

If you like the look of Coconut Lane you can use the code georgiaknight20 to get a discount!

Beyonce’s new fitness range definitely hit the headlines last month and created huge excitement across social media. I myself was one of those excited people and fell into the hype and consumer trap of Queen Bee’s exercise wear.

I purchased a pair of black leggings from the collection online from JD sports and they arrived within three days. As a size 10 on the hips I originally ordered a size XS as I thought the leggings would have stretch. However when they arrived they were far too small, I couldn’t even get them past my knees! I exchanged them for a S and still they were too tight around the legs and bum meaning I had to change them again for a size M!

Considering Beyonce is a curvy woman I was surprised at how little give and stretch these leggings have. As someone who lifts weights and likes to practice yoga I can’t do either of those things wearing Beyonce’ leggings. Don’t get me wrong I’m a huge fan of Bey but this collection does make me question how much input she actually had in creating and designing this range.

On the plus side they make your legs and butt look great! They lift and tighten in all the right places and if you were to go for a light jog you could do so comfortably. Just remember to size up!

Buy the Ivy Park range here.

Review: Pure chimp super tea.

As an avid tea drinker I was delighted to be very kindly sent a pouch of matcha green tea by the pure chimp company who specialise in tea and skincare products.

This is more than you average green tea as it is 100% natural ground tea leaves and one cup of matcha is the equivalent of drinking 10 cups of your standard green tea! It has 137 times more antioxidants and is vegan friendly not to mention it boosts metabolism.

I was surprised to see that the tea comes in powder form and is the brightest green you could imagine. The vivid colour remains long after adding your hot water and leaving it to stand. It reminded me of the powder paints you could get in primary school!

After frothing it up with a whisk and adding a squeeze of grapefruit it made a pleasant and smooth hot drink. It was nice not having to wait for a teabag to brew (I’m not impatient or anything!) and be able to enjoy it straight away.

I experimented with adding it into a smoothie to turn it into a super drink, giving me a boost of energy in the mornings. The great thing about teas in general is that you can add whatever fruits and flavours you like if you get bored and have it hot or ice cold.

Overall I think Matcha green tea is the most flavoursome green tea I have tasted so far and I highly recommend it over any green tea teabags. If you are looking for a smooth blended tea and a healthier alternative with more benefits then I think Matcha tea is the one for you!

30g pouch is £6.95.

Comment below with what tea you recommend!

Things I’m grateful for

Inspired by Gala Darling I have decided to do my own list of things I’m thankful for. Amongst the madness of this crazy world and the mist our busy day to day lives it is important to stop and count your blessings. It is easy to get tied up in the things that don’t matter and sometimes you have to take a breath and stay grounded.

♥ Jamie: my partner in crime and my better half, always supportive, generous, caring and my best friend. We have been together for 2½ years now and I can’t wait to spend many more with him.

Family: last week my Uncle from Australia visited and some family members from up north came down for the bank holiday. There were on hand to help when I locked myself out of the house (silly me) and were there to help me relax after with a bbq at mums and some beers on hand (coke for me). I’m so grateful to have my parents around and I feel unbelievably lucky.

Friends: as much as I would love to have my best friends around me all the time I understand that it isn’t always possible and thats why I’m thankful for the catch ups and down time I get with them when it happens.

The little things…

In two weeks time I’ll be on holiday with my bestie  Beyonce’s new album Lemonade  Wearing comfy joggers  Gala Darling’s book Radical self love  Snapchat filters (they are the best) ♥ Positivity  Smoothies  Muscle and weight gains  Nature and getting up close and personal with the amazing wildlife England has to offer in your very own back garden Cheat day treats from Jamie  Working from home  Being able to get my weekends off  My friend Sasha moving back from Bristol  My trip to Pagham with Jamie’s fam  Messages with Meg  Getting in touch with my spirituality  My pets that make me laugh everyday  Bright lipstick ♥ Falafel  ITV drama Marcella ♥ Astrology Tea (always)
